Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started

What is therapy and how does it work?

Therapy is a confidential, professional relationship in which you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in a safe and non-judgmental space. A therapist provides a structured environment for reflection, insight, and change. Sessions are 50 minutes and take place weekly or fortnightly.

How do I know if I need therapy?

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people seek support when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or simply want a confidential space to process life’s challenges. If something is affecting your wellbeing, that is reason enough to reach out.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity to share what has brought you to therapy and what you are hoping to achieve. There is no pressure to disclose more than you are comfortable with. We will also cover practicalities such as the therapeutic agreement, confidentiality, and how we will work together.

How long will I need to attend therapy?

The length of therapy varies considerably depending on your needs and goals. Some clients benefit from a focused short-term piece of work (6–12 sessions); others prefer longer-term, open-ended therapy. We will review progress regularly and you are always in control of when you wish to end.

Is everything I say kept confidential?

Yes, with limited exceptions. Confidentiality is fundamental to therapy. There are narrow circumstances in which it may need to be broken — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to you or another person, or a safeguarding concern involving a child or vulnerable adult. These are explained fully in the Safeguarding Policy and discussed at the start of therapy.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. Sessions are available via secure video call for clients who prefer to work remotely or who are unable to attend in person. The same standards of confidentiality and professionalism apply regardless of format.

What if I have never had therapy before?

That is absolutely fine. Many of my clients come to therapy for the first time. I will guide you through the process gently and at your pace. There is no expectation of prior knowledge or experience.

Are you qualified and insured?

Yes. I hold a Diploma in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy, am an Accredited Member of the BACP, hold full professional indemnity insurance, and am Enhanced DBS checked. I attend regular clinical supervision in line with professional requirements.

What is the difference between a counsellor, psychotherapist, and psychologist?

These are distinct but overlapping roles. Counsellors and psychotherapists work with emotional and psychological difficulties through talking therapy; the distinction between them relates largely to depth and duration of training. Psychologists typically hold a degree in psychology and may specialise in assessment, research, or clinical work. Nasreen is a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist.

What is your cancellation policy?

A minimum of 48 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule a session. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be charged at the full session fee. Please refer to the Terms & Conditions for full details.

What if therapy does not feel right for me?

The therapeutic relationship is central to effective therapy. If at any point you feel the working relationship is not a good fit, please raise this openly. I can discuss adjustments to our approach or, if needed, provide referrals to other practitioners who may be better suited to your needs.
